Thomas,

Many companies and corporations have strict rules regarding how jobs are posted, discussion with anyone in the company about an offered position, and how people are chosen for interviews, and the interview itself. Often this is done for legal reasons as the corporate attorney has advised what should be done. This allows a feeling of safety from possible legal problems.

Absolute poppycock! Not you for repeating this old canard, but the lawyers who sprout this kind of nonsense. As an attorney I can without reservation say that nothing you might want to know about a job is in any way restricted by any law (excepting always the often silly requirements for government and government contract jobs that require a security clearance). The restrictive laws govern what the company may find out about you, not what you may find out about the company.

I love lawyers who with great pomposity try to tell me what the law is. You can get them sputtering very quickly by asking for a citation to the code, section and paragraph of the supposed statute. Lawyers can backpedal much better than ducks.

Any HR person who says the information you want to find out is restricted by law just lied to you. You don't want to work there.
