John,

One subtle but effective indication that a grid has focus is to place a transparent container with a 2 pixel black border under the grid so that just the border shows all around the grid.

Set the initial borderwidth to 0.

When the grid gains focus (somewhere in the When()), set the borderwidth property of the related container to 2. This appears to the user as if the grid border has thickened and is more emphasised.

In the Valid() put the border back to zero indicating that the grid has lost focus.
