I found this article in the MS KB sometime ago.

"WD2002: Attaching a Large Comma-Separated Variable File as a Mail Merge Data Source Is Very Slow" on the Microsoft web site (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;286901).

Our tests showed that the time required to perform a mail merge using such a file - including Word document data file - is a quadratic function of the number of fields of the data source.

Ouch!!

Anyway, we are converting correspondence generation to a C++ DLL/active reports solution.
