Interesting. My immediate thought was in terms of handling inserts, updates and deletions - especially in the context of clustered indexes. Like you I can't really see why queries would be affected since they are, by definition, read only.

AFAIK it makes no significant difference whether a column is integer, char or varchar when it is being read. So we are in full agreement there at least :)
