Hi Kev
You are searching for info on "Search Engine Optimization" or SEO. Until you know those keywords you bang your head against a brick wall, after that you find hundreds of conflicting sites.
Now, I think I'm pretty good at this SEO stuff so I'll give you my 5 cents worth.
* read up all you can at reputable SEO forums such as SEOChat.com and SearchGuild.com
* install the Google Toolbar because you're going to need to know your site's PR
* keep the content fresh and uptodate if you can
* use the html tags properly particularly H1
* submit your site manually to the key engines, AVOID submission tools
* use your website on everything including (open) forum signatures - don't name your site, use the keywords ie I have "PC Property Manager" but my sig would have "Property Management Software" - reasons: My site will do ok on the product name all by itself, people viewing my sig are more likely to follow a link for a product that meets their need rather than a brand name. I break the rule here because this isn't an open search engine friendly forum.
* move javascript and stylesheet info into separate cached files
* don't break the rules like having invisible text.
let me know if you'd like a quick (free) site review
Sarah
