I have found a practical way to make backups to CDs that saves space.

The first step is to make separate zip files of each important directory into a directory using a batch file and command line PKZIP. This is a relatively quick process. Later those files are copied to CD.

I tried making zip files directly to a CD formatted with UDF format, but found this is rather slow.
