>But I guess my question boils down to "how often does anything really happen?"

Too often. <g>

I'm with Wayne. My spam filter has been deleting on the order of 2000 virus-infested emails daily since Swen hit the net.

Our sales people routinely go on the road and come home with a special payload on their laptops. They're under standing orders NOT to plug their laptops into the network unless someone from IT is on hand to supervise.

One of my co-workers recently set up a new machine for his wife. In the time it took them to connect to Windows update (specifically to get the Blaster fix) a worm crept in. My mother had the same experience just this week.

I, personally, have been hacked. Fortunately, I happened to be looking at the screen at the time so I saw Windows Installer launch and immediately pulled the wire. The only time I've personally had a corporate box hacked was actually a LINUX box.

>Is my experience the exception?

Very much so.
