Pardon me for jumping in, Firebird SQL has an 1.4 MB DLL with the database engine to use for local acces. In my opinion is a better alternative than MSDE. Doesn't need any install operations or registry configuration, just copy the DLL and config files in application folder.

Although I've tried and everything is OK, you simply cannot beat lightning fast VFP local data acces.
