Jerry,
>How can I get my website listed on the popular search engines?
It's all about content of your pages, key words and phrases positioned in that content, links out from your site that include the key words or phrases in the text of the links, to a lesser degree: meta tags for content and description, and very important: incoming links to your site from other good sites.
Generally, if you optimize for Google and get picked up by their spider, you will eventually be picked up by other engines also or be included in other engines because they get content from Google. The best way to get picked up by the spiders is to get an incoming link to your site from a site that already is being regularly spidered.
There are TONS of useful sites that explain all of this and will help you get pointed in the right direction. You can find them by searching on Google for "search engine optimization".
A couple of very good ones are:

Allocate a few days for study and a few weeks for work on your site and getting some incoming links, then within a few months you should see results. (IOW, there is no instant solution).
