Second, IMO, a great new feature in VFP8 is the ability to create a shared connection using SQLSTRINGCONNECT() that can be used when opening remote views and CursorAdapters as well as used in SPT [SQLEXEC()].
As for your connection type options, they are ADO [VFP OLE DB Provider] and ODBC. As for which is best, it depends on what you need to do. ODBC is simpler and easier to use, but I do not think MS is going to be making any updates to it in the future as they are going with the provider.
