Title:
New rendition of 'rendition' in use by U.S. security agencys
[ spelled 'agencies' the way I did because it wouldn't fit otherwise ]
Security circles in the U.S. government (and probably the Canadian government too) now send detainees who are non-citizens who cannot be charged with offenses to foreign countries for "rendition". Not all of them, but certainly those who may be suspect of having some connection with terrorism (at least at this point). Sounds innocent enough. Might even be interpreted as a kind gesture.
When they say that what they really mean is that the receiving country will undertake 'torture by proxy' on their (the sending country's) behalf.
The most regularly used renditioners, apparently, include Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Pakistan, Morocco.
The practise is apparently very VERY fruitful and so is being used more and more.
Reminds me of my favourite Canadian government term - "mandatory supervision" - used in reference to convicts out on pass or parole.
The term is obviously designed to be interpreted as 'it is mandatory that the person be supervised while out and about'. What it really means is that the law makes the convict's temporary release MANDATORY and that s/he is subject to supervision during those times. The SUPERVISION typically is to be in telephone contact with a specific person on a prescribed schedule. Imagine that!?!?!?
cheers
