As regard as Firebird - lately I installed MS Reporting Services Beta - I was qurious if I can connect to Firebird database using its free ODBC driver and make a report - it failed. With VFP and SQLServwer it works without problem.
After playing with firebird a little bit it seems still very interesting to me but it seems also that its price 0$ for customer means also additional efforts/costs for a developer. Using SQLServer/MSDE solution is easier to me because of its much more better tools and documentation and because of the fact that I use developer tools made by MS.
SQLServer developer edition costs now about 40$. MSDE instalation is free and it is enough for most small customers. For most bigger customers price of SQLServer is affordable. Additinally in Poland more and more country wide application use MSDE - so having expertise in SQLServer/MSDE is more usefull than having it in other server solutions. For small sigle user application always will be better to use VFP dbcs. I think that I stay with SQLServer/MSDE.
