>Magazines like FPA have to balance material for novice, intermediate, and expert users. It is hard to do however in the span of barely 40 pages however. When the magazine first came out - it was nearly 80 pages long.
Your first sentence is absolutely correct. FPA has always tried to balance material at a variety of levels. I'll also agree that it's hard to do with fewer pages.
However, the final sentence I quoted is wrong. The first issue of FPA was 44 pages, the same as the most recent issue. (Front and back cover are counted in that.) Over a period of time, the magazine grew. There were some 84-page issues and a fair number of 76-pagers, but that accounts for only a small chunk of FPA's life.
I don't have time now to pull 11 years of FPA off the shelf and chart the page count. I'll do it if I find some spare time.
