Hi, Paul.
>I am looking at utilizing a Linux Server with Windows 2000/XP clients. My database is VFP (I am currently working with 6.0 but have just purchased 8.0). I want to know is it possible for a Samba Server to act as a file server with Visual Foxpro. I'll probably have up to 10 clients accessing the Foxpro Database and Tables.
I have a couple of customers (between 20 and 40 users) that are using old version of our applications based on DBF over Linux/Samba servers with no problems.
One of my customers running the newer version over SQL Server had a Windows 2000 for the SQL and a Novell Netware for the applications (80+ users). I never recommended to keep this mixed environment. It was something that someone decided internally. A couple days ago they started having problems with the Novell Netware, and we couldn't help them with that (we're an MS shop, really). They finally moved all the apps to a Linux box running Samba and they had no more problems.
It seems to be fine as a file server, although it is an alien thing for me.
Hope this helps,
