HTML is HyperTextMarkupLanguage and XML is eXtensibleMarkupLanguage.
It's close to HTML, today it's widely used to separate data from interface. There are tons of information about XML and I think you could find detailed information what're they all about in w3 consorsium's site :
http://www.w3.orgUnofficially speaking within an HTML you can put the interface and data together. It's in a way hardcoding and single person(s) do both the interface and the data processing.
With an XML you separate the data from interface. You might roughly look at it like a table vs the interface part is kept as an frx. Or table vs how a form would be drawn and reactions to clicks etc in a scx.
