we managed to fix it by running Regsvr32 /u mscomct2.ocx to un-register the control and then running Regsvr32 mscomct2.ocx to register it. This fixed it on some PCs but not XP PCs. The user then logged in as Administrator and ran both commands again and it fixed it on the XP PCs.

That is really bizarre. How did you find this solution. Was it in a KB article?
