To my knowledge there is no API support for any other formats except the bitmap. I'd wish I be wrong.
Bitmap only is proprietary Microsoft format. That could explain the situation.

I guess modules/utilities can be found somewhere converting bitmaps to other graphics formats. GIF format is comparatively simple to program, uses just basic encoding.
