We use barcoding in our mfg operation for tracking inventory or data collection. The scanning is done using simple handhelds that simply read the barcode, convert it to text and fill in a field on a VFP form. Then various validations methods happen in the VFP form from that point. All of this is happening in a wireless environment using Terminal Server.

I use handhelds from Symbol and Dolphin.

For printing barcodes we use Easylabel. It is a simple yet strong program from printing lables and a wide variety of barcode formats. You can link it to VFP tables through and ODBC connection.
