AFP and ASP.NET use ISAPI Extensions that communicate with the actual service via named pipes. ISAPI is used by all IIS extensions except for CGI scripts, and the like. The named pipe is a replacement for creating COM server inside the ISAPI DLL which has been causing a lot of grief.
