Don't know if it's relevant (since you're using memo field anyway) but MS give different scenarios for mapping strings and memo fields to xs:hexBinary:

Character(Binary) : content is translated to hexBinary encoding.
Memo(Binary) : contents are not encoded or decoded.

Out of curiosity will the soap client accept a short string ?
