tried that:

m.whatever='arbitrary string'
SQLPREPARE(gnhandle,"update vizkeys set crypt_key=?m.whatever where realkey='one of my keys' ","real")
SQLEXEC(gnhandle)

and the SQLEXEC line still stopped and asked for the value of m.whatever...
