I just did this on my XP machine:

strtofile( readurl( "http://www.levelextreme.com/logo/ftfox.gif" ), "testreadurl.gif" )

and opened the gif up in the browser and it looks fine.

Are you getting any particular error? Have you stepped through the code in the debugger?
