That was it - I don't use the XML format often enough to immediately spot the problem. I will have to get the dll developer to fix his output. He and I would probably both have noticed it but it is a one field record and so at first blush it seems right - if there had been a number of fields to output it might have been more obvious. Thanks for the help.
