Steve Sawyer will present his excellent "Upsizing to Client/Server - Data and Code" at the Chicago Fox User/Developer Group (FUDG). December 9th from 1:00 to 4:30. IT Resource Center, 29 E. Madison Suite 1005, Chicago Loop Donation $25. Free to IT Resource Center Member Organizations.

If you are faced with possibly re-writing or adapting an existing application to work with SQL Server or other database server, or if you're planning on writing a Visual FoxPro application that will eventually be upsized, you don't want to miss this session!
Learn how to design an application that can be upsized with a minimum of effort. Learn how to determine whether an existing application can be migrated to client-server architecture. Learn how to determine how much effort must be expended to accomplish a migration to client-server and what issues must be considered in the process.

Attendees will learn:
1. Advantages/benefits of client-server architecture
2. How the "mindset" of a client-server application differs from a traditional Xbase approach
3. The phases of conversion to client-server
4. Analysis - making the strategic convert/rewrite decision
5. Deciding on data access methods Remote views/SQL Pass-through/Stored Procedures
6. Data conversion/upsizing - The issues involved and the technologies and techniques available
7. Architectural issues such as security and authentication, connection sharing, working with multiple databases, error handling
8. Data upsizing techniques and tools and their relative strengths and weaknesses
9. Traps and "gotchas" that you will probably encounter

Microsoft SQL Server will be used as the basis for all code and technology examples, but most of the techniques demonstrated will apply to other database servers such as Oracle, Informix, Sybase, MySQL, etc.
