Usenet newsgroups can be read without registering anywhere; also, newsgroups and mailing lists give free choice of the client program and such a program can handle arbitrary numbers of them quickly and efficiently (I use Forté Agent for both). Web-based boards are much more cumbersome to use and participation is much more time-consuming, even if the board is an extremely nice and well-done one like UT.
