It's not viewing, it's when you try to reply to the message.

I think this is because the quoted part contains the tag to begin script, and doesn't contain the tag to end it. When such a message is open for reply, the code which posts the editbox content does some re-formatting into the original, so the browser sees the begin tag for real, and doesn't see the end tag.
