Most spammers' main purpose seems to be getting you click on a link or somehow having any feedback from you, and thus checking if your account is valid or not.

A known technique they use is to include an image that is serially named on the server. The idea is that when you just preview this message, the hit on the web server to download image 8948-362338782347085970237.gif is telling their database: Hilmar@ZonneveldCorporation.com is a live address!!!

If you are curious enough, I'd bet that checking the HTML for this message would reveal that the link has some kind of parameter returning a serial number or any other kind of ID that links to your email address.

They are as smart as annoying. Now if all this people, together with the virus and worm writers were working in something more productive...
