"DO NOT REMOVE _pagetotal, it needs to be mentioned in the report or else it won't work".

I've seen warnings like that on invisible labels in forms (which would still show at design time), mentioning other invisible controls (fake offscreen textboxes and such) and they worked. Really nobody touched whatever was mentioned there. So why not in the report.
