As far as the DBCX stuff goes, none of the properties have to be set when the objects are instantiated as long as you run the update properties builder first. Most of the things you're assuming to be true changed a long time before the product was even released. Observations based on the 3/29/97 classes are probably pretty far off base from how things work today.
