I am no expert in C/S but I suspect the performance problems you are seeing may be related more to the design of the application than to whether or not it's using DBF's or SQL Server.

For some real insight into client-server issues go find the thread entitled "VFP best front end?" which is currently running in the Client-Server section here on UT. Some very knowledgeable people with real-world experiences are weighing in on this one.
