Which version of MSDE?

Are you getting this when you try to create an ODBC connection? If so, first thing I'd verify is that I could ping the MSDE box from the other computer you are trying to connect from.

Not sure what you are talking about here. Are you saying you have the client tools installed on another box and you are looking at SEM? You need to register the server to see it appear there.
