If you had to do it *now*, I would say try to add filters to the form that you can pass to the where condition of the query that you are using to fill the control and limit the records returned in that way.
I know it doesn't help you now, but in .NET 2.0 (available next year) there will be overloads to the dataadapter.fill command to allow you to page through the result set and only pull down single pages at a time. Here is the link for it:
