A brief overview:
Cisco Systems offers several industry certifications; the best-known seem to be CCNA and CCNP.
CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is usually a 4-semester course, but if you think you have the skills, you can also go ahead and take the certification exam directly. Basic network course (or exam), with emphasis on LANs.
CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) is a more advanced network course (more WAN concepts, advanced troubleshooting). Another 4 semesters, and CCNA is prerequisite.
The courses are taught all over the World in ca. 10,000 local academies. We currently have about 470,000 students registered.

There have been some interesting articles exploring the usefulnes of certification exams in general; I suggest a search through Google.
