Now, my question is: would it be better to INSERT INTO the values I'm going to need, and not depend on the default field value? If so (this is how I've done it in the past), then can I safely leave the field-level default values? IOW, since I've INSERTed INTO an ID, will the default value NOT fire since the field's not blank? I think your message implies that, but I'd just want to check.
