I am indeed using SPT as mentioned in the article.

However I just tried to convert the resulting string from the filetostr function to base64 using the strconv function. When retrieving the data I base64 decode the memo data before using strtofile.

This works without problems. The resulting data from the conversion to base64 is a bit larger than the original data, but I see no performance hits even with tiff images of over 1MB.
