>Have you noticed how even well-educated people use the phrase "...could care less..." or "...could have cared less..." when what they really mean is "...couldn't care less..." and "...couldn't have cared less..." all the time? I hear it from newscasters, entertainment personalities and yes, even from people here who love to argue the fine points of a discussion. Do a search for these exact phrases in the archives and you might be surprised at the results. Or, then again, maybe you couldn't care less... :-)Renoir
Just like Nick said, as a non-native English speaker, schooled in English grammar outside of the USA, I learned the difference and am very particular about that issue. I do care.
I also notice newscasters, journalists, and others that should know better, that many do not know when to use:
- I vs. me
- who - whom - whose
- their vs. there
- plural vs. possessive (i.e. when to use an apostrophe)
and more...
