Depending on the network environment, there are tools that you can use to determine who has a lock (not what record), on a specific file. In Novell, it's a little cryptic, but you can tell if it is a record or file lock, and who has it on what table. This can all be done from MONITOR on the system console. I'm not sure about NT, but I do know that to determine who is even using a file in NT, you need to have the system on an NTFS partition.
