if they talk about a "gradient effect" it might not be a real color. Have you ever magnified a pressed command button (or a marked checkbox with style set to graphical)? Those elements will not have a real color, it is more that the color is an illusion made out of pixels in alternating colors. Try to magnify the page so that you can see if all pixels are equal.
