played some more with the document - appears that "fields" might be the right reference - at least it returns 10 as a count which is right for the number of checkboxes I have (? oDocument.fields.count) but still haven't found the correct way to reference. When I use
"? oDocument.fields(1).OLEFormat.object.name" it returns an error saying OLEFormat is not an object.

Oh well, I'll keep looking ....
