The underscore is simply a nondescript way to prevent the field name from beginning with a number - e.g., if startyr is 2003 then the field name would be "_2003". Any legal, non-numeric value would work (i.e., alpha or underscore).

if startyr doesn't begin with a number, then you wouldn't need to prefix it.
