Man - there's a lot of things to look at and optimize .. Others here have mentioned most of the obvious ... but ...
if you can afford it -
get a SCSI based RAM DISK of about 20 gig or better and put your app there.
You will see lightning sub zero response time.
Not sure if the OS could keep up - but it does work rather well
with W2K and W/NT.
