OK, so it seems it is possible, then.

However, I think it is a waste of time to access non-standard protocols. If everybody starts using his own protocol, you will have to support scores of different formats, eventually. Better access e-mail through standard protocols like POP3 or IMAP4, and if HotMail doesn't support them, use another e-mail provider (free POP3 providers are available).

Another problem with HotMail is that they may suddenly decide to change their protocol. For instance, their MSN Messenger network now only supports versions 5 and 6; older versions are not supported. They might do the same with their HotMail servers: suddenly use a new POP3-replacement protocol, that requires everybody to get the latest version of Outlook or Outlook Express.

Also, it would be worthwhile to check their license agreement, whether it is legal to access with anything except a Web browser, Outlook or Outlook Express.
