*** Here is an interesting question: I wonder how much VFP work is in India? My guess is that there is not a lot. Indeed, in the pantheon of languages, like it or not - VFP is a legacy tool in the minds of many. That is the perception and that is reality. ***

Hey, John...

I think there are a number of shops in India doing VFP work...both maintenance and some new development. To the degree that much development in India is connected to development in North America, I think the volume is a reflection of what goes on 'here'.

Now...the term 'not a lot' is a bit relative - I personally know of about 10 situations where outsourcing is doing to India...about half are in VFP and half are in .NET. In most of the VFP cases, it's partly because the U.S. counterpart is still using VFP.

One big reason is the same reason that you still see (today) VFP maintenance and new development here...companies need their vertical market apps re-tooled to meet client needs and competitive pressures, yet can't (or won't) pay the training cost to learn/migrate to what will ultimately be better development tools (like .NET). I've lived through that, and pretty much had to learn .NET 'on my own time'.

Those who state that VFP is a legacy tool (which it largely is) still wind up using it for new development, partly because the short-term cost of converting/retooling/etc. is too high for the higher-ups to swallow. I've seen so much of that.
