>You are overlooking the fact that MS surveys their customers to ask about tool usage and uses that info to extrapolate from MSDN sales, according to previous replies from Ken. So, I don't think you can say that VFP and C# are both making the same amount of (total) money for MS, unless you mean for each purchase they produce the same.
Is the concept so hard to grasp, David... when you buy MSDN you pay ONE AMOUNT and get a WHOLE BUNCH of products. So with MSDN there is NO PRICE DIFFERENCE between poduct "A" in the package and product "X". Consequently, there is no profit difference between products for the package.
Any other viewpoint, frankly, is simply a subjective manipulation of the actual facts, surveys or no surveys.
Such 'calculations' could easily be contorted to conclude just about anything you want to.
With people happily using false names to "register" things these days (sites, trade show attendance, etc) I'd also have to wonder at the accuracy of any "survey" regarding tool usage in MSDN. Some might be tempted, for instance, to claim usage of much more than is actually used for any number of reasons. Others might gleefully respond that they 'use' something just because they have installed it.
Just one more opinion
