I usually just play with the resolution, without changing the font zoom.
A 14" or 15" monitor works well with 800 * 600.
On my 17" monitor, I use 1024 * 768.
19" or 21" monitors are not very common here, but I suspect that the practical limit would be something like 1280 * 1024. If you use any larger resolution, some things start getting too small.
