Recently I had a new doorlock rekeyed to match the existing locks on my house. The existing locks were purchased around 6 years ago and of course everything has changed since then. I found out that it would be simpler to have all six of the older locks keyed to match the new one as they no longer manufacturer the pins to the length required for the older locks and keys. To resolve this issue, luckily we could insert two smaller pins into a single slot and hand shave them to the desired length. This was after searching through all of the manufacturers' lock boxes for suitable pins. On a 5-pin lock, this can take sometime. While there is a machine that will shave a key to match the source key, there is no machine that will do the same thing shaving pins for locks. Why isn't there a machine that would use all pins of the same length which would be inserted into the slots and then the entire mechanism could be inserted into the machine and the pins all shaved down to the correct length? I can only assume that somehow it is all controlled by a couple of lock manufacturers that monopolize the system and want us all to continue to purchase new locks.
