{do both have the same workgroup names? also try creating a user on both machines that is the same with identical rights etc.}

I've done all that. The problem is that when I attempt to "contact" the desktop from the laptop, I don't even get a login dialog. I just get an error message.

Given that its a peer-to-peer network, and the ambiguity of the error message, I'm not even sure which machine has the problem.
