You have lots of suggestions on how to handle string translation (which was your initial concern).

However another factor to take into consideration is the greater amount of space required for the equivalent french text. I believe this has been estimated as averaging 33% (and 50% for German). When your forms and controls are enlarged to allow for this the English version may start to look a bit 'spacey' and badly designed. We sub-classed all the English forms for French and German versions and just enlarged (and in some cases re-arranged) the labels, controls etc in the sub-classes.

It does mean seperate compiles for each language but we are using the same code base and, in our case, retaining the look of the English version was paramount.
