I suggest you check the NOVELL data segment size. Many installations I have seen max this out ( unintentionally ) when upgrading to 4.x from 3.x -- this means that the minimum access may be significantly larger than before the upgrade. The reason to use larger segments is to reduce the size of the storage mapping tables -- but at the expense of always picking up extra data on every I/O. You should also take a look at the RAM -- 4.x likes it more than 3.x overall for essentially the same 'work' being done -- thus, if you benefitted from NOVELL's disk caching before, and did not add RAM when converting to 4.x, you probably have significantly less memory available for disk caching.
PS the rumors of C/S superiority over VFP ( or anything else ) needs to be considered in light of the marketing program of the source of the information.
