Personally I prefer a small loader exe which is run from the server. I have had the same loader exe for 5-7 years now, and I will probably not change in the next 10-20 years! The loader exe, among many other things, checks the 'real' exe on the server and compares in to the 'real' exe on the workstation. If the 'real' exe on the server is newer OR different from the 'real' exe on the workstation, the 'real' exe is copied from the server to the workstation and run from there.

However, my first answer was only meant as an answer to the speed issue, not the version issue.
